Ephesians 2:1-6 From Death to Life CLICK TITLE FOR AUDIO
Before you were saved, you were dead doctrinally. Practically, obviously, you were alive. Your soul and your body were alive (Matt 10:28), but you spirit was dead. That is why Jn 3:3-8 speaks of “born of the spirit,” “spiritual birth.” Lk 9:59-60 says let the dead bury their dead. So you were dead in trespasses and sins, Eph 2:1. And in that death, there was evidence that you weren’t spiritually alive:
- Your route (v. 2)
- You walked according to the course of the world heading for destruction, II Pet 3
- You walked as an enemy of God – the world is an enemy of God, Jas 4
- You couldn’t love God and the world at the same time, I Jn 2:15-17
- The world wants to take you down with it – movies and TV actors
- Your ruler (v. 2)
- According to the prince of the power of the air
- According to the god of this world, II Cor4
- But he is already judged, Jn 12:31
- He is heading for the Lake of Fire, Rev 20
- So, he wants to take anyone who won’t receive Jesus down with him
- Your rebellion (v. 2)
- You were among the children of disobedience
- You disobeyed God’s command to, I Jn 3:23, Believe Jesus. You disobeyed the Holy Spirit’a reproving of your sin, God’s righteousness and your judgment. Your sin caused you to not believe on Jesus. Could you also tell that you were dead by some other evidences?
What you talked about (v. 3)
- “Conversation – lusts of the flesh”
- Out of abundance of the heart, the mouth speaketh
- Talked about everything you wanted and liked; no conversation about spiritual matters
- Couldn’t quote scripture
What you did (v. 3)
- Fulfilled the lusts of the flesh and mind (usually cooked up in your head first)
- Bars, entertainment, recreation, work, movies, drugs
- Cheat, lie, steal, exploit, extort, cuss
The result of all this is DEATH. The way seemed right to you, but the end is death. The wages of sin is death. The wrath of God was abiding on you. In spite of all this:
- God extended his MERCY and his LOVE to us
- Tit 3:5
- I Jn 4:19
- Jn 3:16
- He brought us out of death into life (quickened)
- Jn 5:24
- I Jn 3:14
- I Jn 5:12
- Raised us up together, made us sit together
- In heavenly places
- In Christ, Eph 5:30-32
- So in I Thes 4:14, God brings the souls of those who were saved with him at the rapture
So remember, you have mercy, love, life, and resurrection already. So, don’t live like or look like you are dead. Change your route, ruler, rebellion, what you talk about, and what you do.
